This grew to be one of my favourite fantasy books as soon as I read it. Why? The plot is interesting; the characters not OVERLY original, but passable. But what I like the best about this book is the way Keyes playes with folktales and legends, they way he plays with old and contemporary languages. The guy’s well-educated. The guy’s an anthropologist. What else would I need from a fantasy writer.
