Ogden Nash: Grumpy, Funny, Brilliant Old Man — 2 years ago
This collection of over 600 of Ogden Nash’s runs the gamut of styles and topics, and in reading it I traversed many peaks and valleys. There were some poems that I absolutely loved: some were touching, some were thought-provoking, most were hilarious. And then there were the ones I didn’t like. I understand that he can be a grumpy old curmudgeon, but it can get a little grating reading five or ten of poems where he’s complaining in a row. Especially if he’s complaining about stuff like talking pictures, airplanes, and the “modern singing styles” of the 1950s. Still, a few minor complaints don’t spoil the collection. I fell in love with Nash’s skill, wit, and humour, and although I might not re-read this any time soon, I think it would be an excellent addition to any modern library.
