Written in the form of letters to a person whose identity is never revealed, Wallflower is a fun, engaging and poignant read detailing Charlie’s freshman year of high school. As Charlie shares his new social experiences with the reader there are many moments that resonate, and probably any reader, regardless of what one’s social status is or may have been in high school can identify with Charlie on some level. One of his more endearing characteristics is his introspectiveness, and this work reminded me of both The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and The Catcher in the Rye.

I honestly don’t know why I liked this book as much as I did. It’s often compared to another coming-of-age novel, The Catcher in the Rye, and I didn’t like that one much at all. I think that if I’d read it when I was still in High School, or just after graduating, I’d like it even more, but as it is, I’m pushing thirty and I really liked this story. When I read this I immediately got behind the main character and wanted so much for the stories he told to turn out right for him. Chbosky really succeeded in making a character the reader cares about and wants to see do well, even if he is a little awkward and strange. (Particularly if he is awkward and strange?) I burned through it really quickly, and immediately wanted to re-read it. I think that if you’re a little strange inside, you should read this book, and don’t let the YA stamp fool you: this is the most mature YA book I’ve ever read.

This has sat on my ‘To read’ list for 5yrs, only now did I get round to picking it up.
This is an incredible book for anyone who feels comfortable watching life, who ever has been described as quiet when really they were deep in thought, putting the pieces together.
A wonderful coming of age book, that now sits firmly in my all time favourite list.
I read this book in 8th grade and couldn’t put it down. It’s an incredibly good coming of age book and I’m sure you could enjoy it at any age. I love it.

This book took me forever to finish but only because my life got so busy. I just finished it and the end made me cry. It was very easy to pick up again after putting it down for so long.
I guess it hits home when you have a similiar personality as Charlie.

I’ve been meaning to read this for about 5 years now. I finally checked it out from the library and will devour it quickly.

A great book in the same vein as Catcher in the Rye, A Seperate Peace, and all those guys coming of age novels. Captures high school akwardness quite well.
The first time I was reading this book, I was going through a kind of tough time figuring out who I was… It made me realize what I want to do before I die and that I wasn’t the only one. I still love the idea of it all.

It is totally qoute worthy!! You can’t put it down :D I really found that I fell into the plot, there was so much emotion. Confusing at first but totally worth it. I wish I would have read it while I was in highschool, it personifies being different and thinking outside the box.

This is one of my favorite books. I think my love for it might even go beyond favorites. I’ve read it countless times and have had numerous copies (passed many of them onto friends). One of my favorite copies I passed along had been read by about 6 different people and everyone had marked their favorite parts and qouteworthy sections.

I don’t care whether I’m gay to you or not, but this book made me laugh & cry on certain portions :) 8.5/10
i loved this book. a lot more than i thought i would. so, so nice, and a surprising ending. i liked it’s message… one complaint, however: no 15 year old boy would EVER say ”...young girls with blue eyeshadow and awkward jaws”, i don’t care HOW gifted he’s supposed to be. i really liked the fact that they mentioned the main character reading “the catcher in the rye” since the narrative styles were so similar to each other. i was trying to decide who the hell he was writing these letters to, and all i can come up with is the reader. too simplistic of a guess probably.

Glad I read this. Couldn’t put it down, actually. Some wonderful lines… If I remember to think of it, I’ll copy some of them down here.

Nari recommended this book and loaned it to me, so I’ve decided to read it. It’s taken me a bit to get into the author’s writing style, but so far I’m enjoying it. Looks to be a fast, easy read.

It’s labeled as a Teen book though I think most people can understand what it’s like going through high school. It’s a very interesting book and I can definitely relate, though I remember spending all my time studying in high school and not actually having a social life. I really enjoyed this book. It’s written in a series of letters by a freshman in high school to a person he doesn’t actually know, but has heard is a good person “who listens and understands and doesn’t try to sleep with that person at the party” that they could have. That phrase is actually repeated a few times throughout the book, and I find it kind of cutely innocent. Well, this high school kid has a teacher who’s always giving him books to read and write essays about, extra work since he thinks he’s very gifted. But that’s not what the book is all about, it seems to focus more on the relationships between his family and friends. It does seem like it is written by a teenager, which makes it easy to understand and probably more interesting.

A quick read. Interesting in its ordinariness. The story is told via a series of letters written to an unnamed recipient. The narrator’s voice sounds authentic without being unreadable. The minutia and introspection adds quality to the story… but there is a story developing. I didn’t know exactly where it was heading, but that made it even more interesting.
