WORTH CONSUMING!
The translation, originally published in 1966, shows its age. But Basho’s travel sketches are inherently entertaining. My favorite was the journey to view the full moon at the Kashima shrine. Basho and his two travel companions walk to the temple only to be thwarted by cloudy skies that obscure the moon when they most wish to view it. The haikus of this event are both illuminating and beautifully accepting of nature.
