This version of Emma is not without its faults. The production value cannot be criticized, but there were some omissions in the adaptation that leave the viewer wanting more. If you’re not familiar with the novel, you’re at a severe disadvantage in understanding the plot. The fantasy sequences are a little goofy, and Mr. Knightly is seriously unattractive. Kate Beckinsale is cute as Emma, and I appreciated that this film was made before everyone started bleaching their teeth. It’s nice to see the yellowish tint when she smiles. It makes Emma seem more human.
