This book is worth reading just for the parade of figures about the amount of resources we consume. Add to this, the increasing demands being made by China and India (alongside America and Europe) and you know we’re heading for trouble!
Examples:
America has twice as many shopping malls then schools
Humans take 40 percent of the earths’ entire plant production for their own purposes.
China added eleven thousand more cars to its streets every day in 2003
By 2005 the global collection of used cell phones will top 500 million most destined for landfill.
Luckily, Hooked offers some sound philosophical and spiritual solutions to this impending crisis. As you would expect, the Middle Way is encouraged, with an en emphasis on changing ourselves, our desires and our impulsive need to consume, and creating a ripple effect outwards.
Worth reading.
