Am I Not Your Girl? was easily overshadowed by Sinead’s erratic behavior at the time of its release (i.e. she ripped up a picture of the Pope on national television). While her inner life may have been full of turmoil, Sinead recorded a lovely album of jazz and Broadway standards from music’s golden era. She’s backed by a swingin’ full band (including a horn section). She delicately handles the subtle material (Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered & Black Coffee). But Sinead proves she can also wail with the best of the lady vocalists (Secret Love & Why Don’t You Do Right?). Am I Not Your Girl? has always been a favorite of mine. It’s perfect for Sunday mornings and rainy days.
