WORTH CONSUMING!

Well, I definitely liked it a lot better than Juno. It’s a great movie and worth watching.

A review of this — 1 year ago

A glorified slasher/torture/revenge movie. Honestly, it wasn’t nearly as “psychologically disturbing” as I thought it would be. I think any general summary of it would clue you in to just how psychologically disturbing it is. Or maybe it was just all the reviews I read going on and on about how this is not for the faint of heart. That’s not to say it’s all about lollipops and unicorns because, obviously, it’s not. But really it was a lot of a little girl talking a whole lot about how she was going to cut his balls off and then not actually doing it. (Patrick Wilson’s acting in that scene is actually frightening. Otherwise the whole thing could have come off as ridiculous.) Or maybe it was because I could actually really relate to Hayley and I was a super angsty 14/15/16 year old who was convinced she would cut someone’s balls off if he tried to rape her and tended to play a lot of revenge scenarios in her head. Maybe not everyone is as twisted and dark as I am. Maybe everyone else was a totally well-adjusted, happy, innocent adolescent and this truly is shocking. Somehow I doubt that, but who knows.
Also, the ending seemed really improbable. At the very least, he would have attacked her and let her shoot him. No matter how guilty he was, self-preservation is everyone’s first instinct. And he could have always fled to France.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s tough to watch at times, but ultimately I’m glad that I watched it. Hard Candy is built around terrific and ambiguous performances by Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson. The film is very manipulative which destabilizes our emotions and sympathy as the story unfolds.
It begins in a chat room with a screen filled only with text as some flirting happens and a meeting is arranged. Things become much more harrowing from that point on as a man in his 30s meets a girl who is 14. Things do not go well for him after that point in a story that plays on our fears and expectations in surprising ways.
It may be too intense for some people and the entire film often stays on very difficult edge as it spins us around and horrifies us. It’s definitely a film that will provoke discussion and many parts of the film are open to interpretation.

WORTH CONSUMING!

A very intense scene in the middle of the movie (others have spoiled it already) forced me to leave the room overwhelmed with nausea-even though there was no explicit violence involved at all. Sometimes psychological horror is the most powerful kind. Fortunately I was watching it on video, so I was able to come back to it later and persevere to the end-and I’m glad I did! Overall it’s a chilling, enthralling twist on a story that could easily have been another clichéd tale of sexual predation.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Even though I’m totally female, I could feel my balls being cut off by this female inch by inch.

Definitely not a date movie! — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I loved this one so much. I was engaged from the first 30 seconds to the final scene. And while it’s not a date movie, it’ll definitely give you and the (Edit: non-first-date) person you’ve watched it with something to talk about.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie was frustrating really. It was disturbing and proved that it is very true….You really NEVER know what a stranger is thinking, going to do or is capable of. There world is full of very dangerous sociopaths…and one never knows when they are dealing with such a person. It could be anyone. Even a 14 year old girl.

A Very Timely Theme…be careful who you meet from the internet. People are not who or what they make themselves out to be or seem to be….Also be careful of your own actions – things you think no one will ever know about, or are private….someone somewhere can and may see/know/find out….

The frustration comes from trying to believe that a 14 year old tiny girl could overpower and control a grown man…There were so many instances he could’ve taken over, gotten help, or recorded her actions…but didn’t. This leaves you questioning – could this happen for real? Maybe. Also unanswered questions whether some things took place or were an elaborate Mind-game?

I didn’t like the ending….too abrupt. Left things wide open. Yes good for discussion…but frustrating. A sequel? Probably not since the film had to be super low budget – with like 4 or 5 actors in it and only 2 locations (diner and the guy’s house).

Worth seeing? Hmm. Yeah I guess so.
Disturbing though. Not for the psychologically weak perhaps.

I think it was a bit disturbing. I like that, but there was too much planning involved for it to be believable. Nice revenge story.
