WORTH CONSUMING!

Robert Redford has aged so well. He is not a very likeable character in the beginning of this film, but he grows on you as he softens (thanks in large part to prodding from Mitch, played beautifully by Morgan Freeman). J-Lo turns in an excellent performance, too, with more grit than I would usually give her credit for. The story is nicely unfolded by director Lasse Hallstrom. There is plenty to like about this…even the bear.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I don’t believe I have seen a bad Lasse Hallstrom film. This one is wonderful. The parallels drawn are strong but not overworked, the main drama between Redford and Freeman wonderfully acted (and better viewed the second time when you know more of their story and can see what the significance of the stares are). Lopez is not bad (not good but not bad, this role doesn’t require much and she’s fine in it). Lovely setting too.

And what I liked most about this film is how the townspeople didn’t have to talk about their sadnesses — everyone knows them. They are not hiding, but they don’t have to blabber on and on about it either. Love that sense of real community that is in that detail.

And I don’t want Redford as my grandpa — I’d still take him as my lover! Scruffy and all. Love how the man sits a horse.
