WORTH CONSUMING!

I haven’t seen the Illusionist yet, so this is not going to be a comparison.

Anyways, I liked the ending of the movie. Although if you’re quick, you probably could have figured some of the twists beforehand. Nonetheless, I liked the storyline and recommend this movie. However, I don’t think it’s something you can watch more than once.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Mark told me in a comment on my review of The Illusionist that if I enjoyed it, I would love The Prestige. He was right. It’s a must see. A little pat on the back for myself… After watching this movie, I was able to make my DVD remote disappear for a full 30 minutes, prompting a late-night couch sweep. After giving up, it reappeared magically in my shoe that I had taken off during the movie. Very cool.

Let me know what powers you get after watching the movie. I think I’m going to go watch Smallville next. The whole flying thing is appealing…

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Twist comes too little too late. Boredom has set in. Clones and twins. Bah! There’s a glimpse of great acting – when Patrick Bateman shone through, but Logan’s unusually dull. Scarlett Jo – sexiest woman alive, according to some magazines, provides little or no interest (strangely enough), and I don’t know why. Maybe because her accent isn’t believable? And upon realising that, you might start to think that all she’s really good for is being cute.

Christ.

2006 was a year of magicians at the movies. Go see The Illusionist instead.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Seen it in Rome on Ney Year’s eve with my girlfriend and another couple. When Michael Caine shows the dead bird, the other girl grabs my arm, I see her jaw drop like a Warner Bros cartoon, and then she asks me if he REALLY killed the bird. She couldn’t believe her eyes, she almost began to cry! __

Dark and sad movie about revenge and obsession. I was planning to skip this one due to Scarlett Johansson, but I’m glad I saw this. Christian Bale was great as usual.

It was entertaining but I thought The Illusionist was better. The twist and turns were more predictable in The Prestige and where did the twin come from?

Why I recommend this — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I saw this movie because we missed the movie we wanted to see. We thought it was great and it was a movie we both thoroughly enjoyed which is even better. Most of the twists you could see coming but they surprise you. It was executed beautifully and is really just an entertaining movie.

The “twists” were pretty obvious from about 40 minutes from the end, so that’s never a great sign, and one of the twists was really pretty stupid, but the acting was good and the movie was quite fun overall, so I can’t complain. It entertained me for the full length of the film

WORTH CONSUMING!

Oh, my dear, this is not just a film about magic – this is a dark study of obsession, and secrets, and revenge.

My main advice is to see it before someone spoils the twist(s) for you!

Beware, though – I found The Prestige utter engrossing, but also dark and a little disturbing at points. Still more than well worth the 130 minutes!

WORTH CONSUMING!

I went to see The Prestige this evening. I was a little wary of the film in light of the calamity that was The Illusionist. I wasn’t sure that I was ready for another movie about magicians. I’m happy to report that The Prestige is a much better film than The Illusionist. The acting and script are superb, and there’s enough going on that you don’t mind the length of the movie at all (and, at 128 minutes, it’s long). (I actually just viewed Hugh Jackman’s IMDb profile, and was surprised to discover that he really hasn’t featured in any Australian movies – a handful of TV series, and that’s it. Unlike many Australian actors working in the US, he really began his career there). In any case, The Prestige has an all-star cast, and they do a great job (I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m a huge fan of Scarlett Johansson), there’s great character development, some lovely plot twists, and an ending that leaves you unsure of what you should think.

A Clever Trick — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Are you watching closely?

Christopher Nolan is a talented filmmaker, so I was looking forward to “The Prestige”. I was expecting a film that was showy, but it surprised me with subtlety. It was like a good magic trick that is confident and subtle and classy. With solid performances from Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman and the always watchable Michael Caine, it’s a study of magic and illusion and obsession. While it seemed slow to me at the start (maybe because of my expectations) it gradually drew me in until I was completely absorbed. It seems more complicated than it is and it works on several levels with a complicated, yet elegant structure.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Much too confusing and long. I couldn’t figure out what was going on half the time. I may have a short attention span but even my Dad didn’t get it.
