A Review of Marie Antoinette — 5 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Marie Antoinette isn’t a bad movie, just an utterly boring one. Sofia Coppola’s direction and screenplay are totally devoid of anything of interest, apparently refusing to sacrifice her clunky dialogue — which falls from each actor’s lips like lead bricks — for anything even resembling character development. Only bored, angst-filled teen-aged girls will be able to relate to watching Marie be bored and angst-filled for two yawn-inducing hours of her eating candy and shopping for shoes.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was actually surprised as to how much I liked it! I saw a clip of it and was discouraged by Kirsten’s acting, but she really didn’t have that much dialogue at all. I’m such a sucker for movies based in the past though. There were some instances where music was misplaced and just didn’t fit at all, but the visuals were great!!! So colourful. The ending was a bit abrupt as well, but I would recommend it for any girly girl, which I’m not even much of, hahaha.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I want to party like it’s 1778.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I liked it all the more because. Sofia has taken one of the most dramatic, soap-operatic, moments of Western history and stripped out all of the plot, mystique, and grandiosity. Other than the costumes and set, there’s no hint of Marie Antoinette’s historical significance… what you watch instead is two hours of what could’ve been a light high-school drama, except the high schoolers happened to be King and Queen of France, and instead of failing Math there’s a revolution and beheading.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Does not use moving images to tell a story, create a mood, make an argument or produce critical estrangement.

Like a lot of people, I’d compare it to a series of perfume ads except it doesn’t make me want to buy anything either.

Too much staring out a window. As if we haven’t seen enough of that in 100+ years of cinema history. I heard this was a major part of S. Coppola’s last film too.

I kind of liked the music . . . and Schwartzman was kind of amazing.

Oh yeah, and they use too much dialog to disclose information. Definately notamovie.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s a visually stunning movie, and it’s so full of color. And you’d think that the modern soundtrack wouldn’t really work well with a biopic about an eighteenth century monarch, but it’s very effective. Go see it! It’s really good.
