WORTH CONSUMING!

If you are, like me, under the impression that this movie will tell of the Queen’s entire life, you’re wrong. It portrays the event of Diana’s death seen from the Queen’s perspective, and bits from Tony Blair’s perspective. Which is an interesting take on things in any case. Every detail could/may really have happened, and I kept wondering how much of it was actually true (does she drive around in 4×4’s all alone, does her husband call her “cabbage” as a pet name, is Cherie Blair so vicious towards the monarchy, did Tony Blair stand up for her in private too,... ). I thought it was very interesting. And as mentioned in several reviews before mine, the acting is outstanding (even in the details: the Queen’s exact manner of speaking, Blair’s creepy too-broad-smile,...). Costumes and setting really fitted too, and you get drawn in. Well, I obviously did. I’d give this 4 1/2 stars if it let me. A great film for fans of character studies, and interesting for anyone who has seen the Diana-hysteria on tv at the time.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoyed this movie, if only for the unusual perspective of seeing “the Queen” driving around Balmoral in a Range Rover alone and appearing frequently in a bathrobe, neither of which I expected!

Character Study — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a character study, so it might be a little slow for you if you love fast paced action flicks or the like. (My husband actually fell asleep during this film.) However, I enjoyed the movie. I felt for the Queen. (Perhaps this is so because her mannerisms and dress remind me more than a little of my grandmother.) The Queen ended up being temporarily villainized because of what was basically a cultural misunderstanding.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was very interested by that movie for some reason, and that interest was fueled when Helen Mirren won the Oscar for best acting. I finally bought it really cheap, used, at a local renting shop.

I really liked the movie! I can’t say I’m really interested in the royal family, I don’t care so much about gossip and stuff, but nonetheless it was really interesting to see the reality the Queen is faced with. The movie was well-done, the landscapes were beautiful and it was in general a good glance of life when you’re a royal (I guess!). I really recommend it.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Hmm.

It was okay – very well acted by Helen Mirren – but nothing more. Certainly not worthy of all the media and award gushing, imo. I’m not sure what we’re supposed to take from this film: sympathy for the queen? A different view of the royals in general? Something else??

Then again, it wasn’t the most obvious choice for me, as I have little above distain for any of the main players. There is no such thing as a blood line ‘superior’ to the rest of us, let alone a reason we should throw money at some of the richest people in the country. Diana was a little rich girl, who spent the odd day of her pampered existence doing charity work – like she had much else to do. She played the media like a fiddle. The queen… well, yeah, she’s an old lady who’s tried to do an outmoded ‘duty’ to a country that doesn’t respond so well to the monarchy any more, and she’s done okay. But don’t get me started on politicians!!

I just… didn’t feel anything about this. It wasn’t anything new, really, and it lacked that ‘something’ that could hold up against portrayals of other monarchs. Still, at least now I’ve seen what all the fuss was about, one way or another.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Brilliant. Academy-award-level acting and directing. This is a must-see movie.

WORTH CONSUMING!

OK, so it bothers me that The Queen gets a prestige picture, while all Diana gets is a bunch of trashy made-for-TV specials.

But I liked this. Does The Queen wear some kind of purple in every scene?

Didn’t love the heavy-handed deer symbolism, or the rather sudden transition in Blair’s attitude. Did love Blair performance. Mirren looked so lovely and now, post-surgery she looks less so.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Very, very good. There wasn’t a single weak part of the film – cast, writing, production. Of course Mirren was justly praised and awarded for the role, but I was equally taken by Michael Sheen’s performance as Tony Blair. And who knew the Queen Mother was so funny?
