A story about this — 3 years ago
I always forget how damned smart Kundera is about human flaws, and how funny and compassionate he is about them too. That’s why I love him and I loathe frickin Ayn Rand - Kundera really understands people, and he sees their tendencies towards selfishness, confusion, and petty stupidity but he clearly enjoys people despite those things - or perhaps because of them. Mz Rand seems to think herself above those tendencies, and therefore a palpable distaste for human beings pervades her books, which makes them wholly unpleasant to read.
I don’t know why I’m thinking of Ayn Rand at all—but there you go.
