I didn’t finish. I know it is wrong, this is a classic of Southern literature, but I have the excuse of having read it before. Perhaps it was just not a good time to attempt a reread.

Carson McCullers is a marvelous writer, but I could never get into this somewhat disjointed tale of lives intersecting in a Southern town.

i love the title.

A book about dignity. I can’t believe she wrote this when she was 23. It has a wise old salt sort of insight into human nature about it. Very sad, but somehow affirming for all that.

This is writing as it should be. McCullers pulls you into the lives of her characters, all fascinating and fully realized. Rich in detail. A writing style that is both informed and modern. Sometimes it’s apparent that this is a first novel… but if this was her first, I can’t wait to read the rest of her work.
