this book won the pulitzer prize- why? i kept hearing the name john cheever and forgot what he had written so i picked up this book at the lib. i figured a book of short stories would give me a good sampling of his writing. i read 2 stories and that was it. you could tell the book was written in the period it was. today’s authors use a whole different vernacular. i did think the writing was ok. i guess i’m just not a short story fanatic. i like novels. in short stories just when i’m about to be transported to another time i am thrown back into reality because the story is over. also the stories don’t usually have anything to do with one another, another negative for me. i do think people should read it, mainly for the awards it has won and possibly to tell me if the stories improved later on. i skipt around because in the preface it says it goes in chronoological rder from the time they were written. so young cheever to old cheever. plus the guy was born in ma. and being from ma. myself i feel i have an alliance towards him.
