A double-edge sword. — 4 years ago
Like many films that attempt to deal with subjects like racial tolerance, this film is blatantly racist when looking at it with a contemporary eye. I say it’s worth watching mainly because it’s a film that everyone who believes the stereotypes about Asians – especially Asian women – should be demolished should see.
Not sure what I mean? Go watch Deborah Gee’s documentary about Asian stereotypes, Slaying the Dragon, which has interviews with Nancy Kwan (who played Suzie Wong in this film) herself. And then try watching The World of Suzie Wong again and tell me you don’t see it.
