The “deeper message” is not delivered convincingly (i.e., you must love yourself before you can experience love outside yourself), but this is truly a light-hearted movie that does not take itself too seriously. I love the way the girls can be so self-confident in some situations (like the scene at Fatassburger) but so coy when they get with real live Nigerian dates in Palm Springs. It felt very real in that respect.
One thing I did not like was how the girls are preoccupied with buff guys, while dissing “skinny” girls. A bit hypocritical? Still, it’s all good fun. Mo’nique may be no Queen Latifah, but she’s good for laughs. The film just barely managed a PG-13 rating; I would have preferred to see it cross the line to R in DVD, but perhaps that’s just me wanting see a bit more “Phat” (pretty, hot and thick) girls.
