As Tears Go By - The Hong Kong "Mean Streets" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I watched As Tears Go By because I wanted to see some movies by Wong Kar-Wai, and this looked like a good place to start. Plus, it stars Andy Lau and Maggie Cheung, two of my favourite Hong Kong actors. It’s a little dated – a Cantonese version of “Take My Breath Away”??? – but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the scenes with Andy Lau taking care of his little brother, Jacky Cheung the most, even if I didn’t always understand why he deserved such loyalty. Performance-wise, Lau and Cheung put in good performances, and I was particularly impressed with Cheung. I also saw some very interesting camera angles and lighting effects that make me more excited in seeing more of Wong Kar-Wai films. A good movie that shows a lot of promise from all involved.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Worth watching entirely for the Tom Cruise/Top Gun homage – complete with ‘Take My Breath Away’ in Cantonese.
