I felt conflicted about this movie. The best I can say about it is that Pixar did a fairly decent job with a story that was utterly formulaic and unoriginal. Although I liked the movie well enough, I felt this nagging sense of faint disappointment. I thought that the movie could have been better, but on the other hand, I couldn’t see how it could have been better, given the triteness of the script material. Still worth a viewing, but not up to usual Pixar standards for freshness and fun.
One unqualified positive comment. I watched it with my boyfriend (who calls all animated features “cartoons”), and during the opening moments of the film, he looked at me and said “You told me this was a cartoon; this isn’t a cartoon, it’s a real movie.” The animation was that good.

I enjoyed this film a lot – something I wasn’t expecting to do. It did take a while for me to get into it – I found at least the first third of the film to be pretty dull (admittedly, car races do nothing for me, so the entire opening sequence left me thinking, “Oh PLEASE don’t make me sit through another hour of this”). But then it picked up and got interesting (I think the tractor tipping was the turning point for me – that was SO FUNNY)! I will also say that this film features one of my all-time favourite Disney movie endings. Seriously. I found this a very satisfying ending, so much more so than usual, but obviously I can’t go into detail without spoiling it for those who haven’t yet seen it.
I do agree with others who’ve said it’s maybe not the best kid’s movie ever. My son enjoyed it, but he wasn’t raving over it, and he got wiggly by the end, which tells me he’d lost interest somewhere along the way. It was definitely worth seeing, though. Based on the way I felt walking out of the cinema, I’ll rate it 8/10.

But like a previous reviewer said, cute but lacking.
yes I did have a good time, and yes everything was produced to the high standard we’ve come to expect from Pixar.
It just lacked… soul.
Guido was my favorite by far :P

The film is cute, there’s no doubt about that, but there’s still something missing. With the exception of Larry the Cable Guy, there is really no emotion or heart to this film. The “selfish person learns to care about others” storyline is so worn it’s almost thread bare. While not a bad movie, Cars is Pixar’s first real bump in the road and hopefully not a sign of things to come.
