A tall, brawling and sprawling yarn about the sdventures of one hapless participant in the American West. Dustin Hoffman stars as the nerdy Jack Crabb who is bounced from one existence to the next, meeting many colourful characters on the way, but never really fitting in anywhere. Despite the humour throughout this film, the overall mood is tragic, as the native American way of life is subsumed by the ways of the white man. I have seen it many times in the last 40 years and it never fails to move me.
