After seeing Mansfield Park i was looking for another movie with Jonny Lee Miller… i was surprised to find him in a Lonesome Dove prequel. i was even more surprised to find F. Murray Abraham as a Jewish sailor, Edward James Olmos as a Mexican captain, Jennifer Garner as Gus’ love interest, Gretchen Mol in a small part (so familliar and yet i couldn’t place her: i think i’ve only seen her in The Thirteenth Floor), and that David Arquette could imitate Robert Duvall’s swagger so perfectly. This miniseries isn’t anywhere near as good as original, and some of the dialogue is pretty pathetic (oh, that person must be in this scene just because they have one line…oh look, i was right) but it is interesting just to see the actors in very different roles. Olmos and Abraham are excellent and Miller looks attractive even under all the grime. Worth seeing, but don’t keep your hopes up. (:
