WORTH CONSUMING!

As missmartinit mentions below, this book gives a strong nod to “The Velveteen Rabbit.” It owes an even larger debt to Rachel Field’s wonderful book “Hitty: Her First Hundred Years.” All three are well worth reading!

WORTH CONSUMING!

A lovely, intensely romantic book with just enough of a dark side to keep it from being saccharine. I don’t know how she did it - I started it thinking, “why would anyone rewrite the Velveteen Rabbit?” But this is, if not wholly original, at least refreshing. Edward is a charming character, and the sections describing Pellegrina were a bit Neil Gaiman-esque (a good thing). :)

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was a very wonderful story that reminded me of the “Velveteen Rabbit.” Edward Tulane is a china rabbit, who is self-absorbed, and only through being lost and cared for by many different people does he realize what love really is. I sometimes forget that as adults we tend to forget this. Sometimes, it is nice to be reminded though a children’s tale that presents the difficulties of having certain realizations but not in a neat, clean way that some children’s books might be presented in. This is the first Kate DiCamillo book I have “read” and I am looking forward to other books by her. She weaves in and out of Edward’s journey and makes you feel as if you are with him: being cast overboard, carried in a dog’s mouth or riding a train with a hobo. I highly recommend this. It’s short and quick and a great reminder of what it is to be loved, lose it and rediscover it…

WORTH CONSUMING!

A very adorable and yet heartfelt book about a china rabbit who was once proud of himself and never loved his owner (but she had loved the china rabbit), who, after a series of disasters, learns what it means to love and be loved.
