A story about this — 46 weeks ago
Filmed in 1974, this movie based on a Dick Francis novel has all the hallmarks of its era, from corny musical interruptions intended to heighten suspense to a prolonged chase scene and a dollop of “free love.” Lots of 70s details like old movie posters on the walls, tinny rock bands, and “mod” clothing add to the nostalgic fun, although it is nowhere near the caliber of Richardson’s earlier films (The Entertainer, Tom Jones).
Horseracing, of course, is the main focus, involving the mysterious doping of a potential jumps champion that leads to the death of its owner. An amateur rider gets hot on the trail of the criminals when the police won’t. Judi Dench plays the bereaved widow with cougarish vim (yes, she has a bedroom scene). One can only hope that no horses were injured in the making.
