I am not sure if i was in the right mood for reading this, but it was a bit of a slog. The story started beautifully and was certainly compelling, and although i understood Marquez’ use of the names being repeated through the family’s history it only served to add confusion and much flipping back to the family tree at the start of the book. The final 70 or so pages once again picked up the pace and led to a satisfying and beautiful ending – but it is hardgoing in the middle.

Fantastic book. Quite surreal but flows nicely although its hard to remember all the names and how they interconnect

Amazing translation, but to me it feels like the 1000 years of the 100 Years of Solitude.
Curious. Usually I hate anything that makes Oprah’s list.
To me, Gabriel Garcia Marquez is the greatest writer alive today. He doesn’t write; he spins magic.

Can it possibly be better than Love in the time of Cholera?

One of the best books ever written. Garcia Marquez is a master and should be recommended reading for all!
