Starts off very strong, with breathtaking artwork, and the way the animals act and interact really caught my ear – it just felt right. As time went on, and the lions were out of the zoo longer, I found that they (and the other animals) spoke more and more like humans. I couldn’t tell whether this was intentional and supposed to deliver some deep lesson (probably) and it just didn’t hit me, or whether Vaughan had lost his ear for the dialogue. Whatever the cause, this meant I enjoyed the book less the more I read. It still wasn’t a waste of time, and aside from some scale issues, the art continued to impress throughout, but it just wasn’t as good or as deep as it could’ve been.
