WORTH CONSUMING!

This album is 11 years old, and yet it doesn’t sound dated or stale – quite an achievement! I don’t know if it was ever of a time, it just ‘is’, for me.

It’s a huge shame that Del Amitri never made it ‘bigger’, ‘cos I genuinely think they deserved it. The lyrics are worth listening to, the music is catchy and well-crafted. Please don’t judge them on the few singles you might remember – I love the albums 10 times more than I could just the singles.

Change Everything has the huge benefit of kicking off with my favourite song ever – Be My Downfall. It just catches me every time; sad, beautiful, twisted, lovely.

I wouldn’t claim the rest as stand-out tracks to rave about, but I love them anyway. Sometimes it’s the whole song, sometimes more the music, sometimes it’s the brilliant snatch of lyric that makes me stop what I’m doing and just listen:

And the steps of this stone church
Are peppered with confetti hearts
Like a million little love affairs
Waiting to fall apart

Del Amitri songs are often about love, but as someone who dislikes love songs I can still love this. From the uber-misery of First Rule of Love (“Love is like gravity, holding down your heart”), my should-be ‘theme song’ (I’ve had enough bad news) To Last A Lifetime, to the simply quite lovely Sometimes I Just Have to Say Your Name – I slip back into this album, like the rest of them!, with comfort and a renewed sense of “wow, this is good!”
