Female Gothic — 1 year ago
Paradise Lost recast in the vein of the female gothic novel. A disturbing work of the imagination about the relationship and reciprocal obligations of man and his creator. How does one weigh the horror of the unnatural and physically grotesque with the yearning for companionship, learning and ultimately love. And so it is with Frankenstein and his creation – the being that will come to haunt him when rejected and the prospect of his Eve constructed from parts from charnel houses goes by the way. Despite the later charicaturization and Hollywood treatments, the story remains iconic and as unsettling as Mary Shelley planned it.
