This was an interesting book about not only Chris McCandless’s tragic and unnecessary death, but about how someone’s romantic view of nature can blind them to its harsh reality.

This is an interesting book for a nature buff or someone looking for adventure. It makes the reader analyze their own chosen path. I admired McCandless for his audacity, his dedication, and his strength (yes, I know that seems ironic).
This is a book that will get you thinking, however, as other reviews have stated, it is also a book that seems to have a lot of filler.
the book was good but i tihnk it would have sufficed to leave it as a magazine article. it was peppered throughout with krakauer’s own experiences, which he mentioned in the beginning. the guy was obviously intelligent and i don’t think had a death wish, just made some errors. it’s a short book and a quick read. obviously mcandless was young so not a lot of material to write about. his adventures were fun, and reading excerpts from his journal kept the pace high. moving piece on when they enter the bus after his death.
I wish I had the courage to take off like this guy did with nothing but the clothes on my back and the change in my pocket.
Now, dying out in the wilderness like that wouldn’t be so cool.
Surprisingly thorough considering he used a pseudonym the entire time he was on the road, and of course, you can’t go wrong with Krakauer.
