Another version of Shopaholic — 43 weeks ago
I was disappointed when I started this book. After only one chapter the lead (Emma) reminded me too much of Becky (from Kinsella’s famous Shopaholic series). A bit clumsy/quirky and trying to fake her way through office life out of necessity. After 3 chapters you already know how the book is going to end. Surprise surprise, the male lead is a very wealthy & famous business leader, slightly intimidating, but intriguing our girl lead despite making her feel uncomfortable (Luke Brandon anyone?). Even the way the plot pulls together is the same: doing a favour for someone (this time, grandpa) turns out to be a great carreer move.
“Can you keep a Secret?” is just another version of “Shopaholic”, minus the shopping of course. It’s as if the author has a template, and just needs to fill out some names, the main character’s quirk and: voila! Chicklit done, originality zero.
The only thing that stood out for me was the character of Kerry, Emma’s awful niece and her husband Nev. But that storyline was just stopped with a convenient “and they lived happily ever after” outcome.
So my point after this rant: don’t read this if you’re looking for something new & fresh after the “Shopaholic” series.
If you haven’t read “Shopaholic”, you could enjoy this book. I admit I probably would too. Hence I’m not labelling this as “not worth consuming”.
Or if you are looking for another Becky and would love some more: this is for you.
