It’s somewhat ironic that a book which celebrates literature should itself be so unliterary. There are any number of holes you could pick in Fforde’s writing style, but that would rather miss the point: this book’s appeal lies in its frenzied innovation, not in its wordsmithing, character development or even its episodic and somewhat incoherent plot.
I’m curious as to whether Fforde keeps the ideas coming later in the series, or whether having established his world he simply runs his stories through it. Not curious enough to read the next one particularly soon, though.
This is without question the most inventive, original, intelligent, fun novel I’ve ever read. I recommend it to anybody and everybody who loves wit and humour and above all else, literature. This entire series is just simply wonderful.
Clever premise, got sillier and sillier and cheesier as it wore on.
The information on the bacl of the jacket and the first sentence made me buy this book. 12 pages in and I can’t tell if I will like it or hate it. More when I’m further in.
A slow start but a fun end. This fantasy/mystery is perfect for book lovers, especially of the classics.
I absolutely loved this book! Funny, enthralling, and balanced the cliche with pure enthusiasm, a well-written plot and finely honed wit.
I love books that take reality as we think we know it and then skew it — just a little bit — and change everything. Therefore, loving this book.
