Given the praise this book earned, I was expecting much better. The protagonist I liked, but Ali’s style bothered me to interference point. I especially disliked the letters from Nazneen’s sister. The parallel story was deftly imagined; I also liked the descriptions of Chanu and Nazneen’s power dynamic with their neighbors and each other. But, oh, this book, could have been half as long and better for it.
