A quick and enjoyable read, with a fair bit of “just what’s going on here”? In many ways, the beginning felt like the start of Mistborn to me – a structured magical system, with a living god-king at the top of the power heap, seemingly oppressing everyone. As I read, though, the mystery portion hooked me and I stopped making comparisons. The characters, too, began to interest me, although none of them were as fully-fleshed as the principals from Mistborn.
Ultimately, it was lots of fun to read, but lacks the extreme care and precision I’d been hoping to get from Brandon Sanderson, based on my limited experience. Ah, well – you can’t be at the top of your game all the time.
