Family life vs. personal fulfillment — 44 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Adrienne is a wife in her 40s, with 2 children, on the brink of separating from her husband. She used to enjoy arts&crafts but family life no longer allows her the time. Dr. Flanner is a man in his 50s, divorced.

Dr. Flanner: What keeps you safe?
Adrienne: Well, you fall in love with someone, you know… and you make a family… and you become what you think you’re supposed to be. And you change and you give up certain things. Then they look at what you’ve got left and you wish you… I don’t know, you just think maybe you shouldn’t have.
Dr. Flanner: Don’t.
Dr. Flanner: Just don’t do it anymore.
Adrienne: ...Huh.

Later, Adrienne decides to follow through with the separation from her husband and starts a correspondence with Dr. Flanner, who is now working out of Ecuador.

Adrienne [in a letter]: When Jack left me, it wasn’t just our marriage ending. It was the loss of all the hopes that I’d had for the future. I tried to move on, but the world didn’t seem that interested in me anymore. Then you came along, and helped me believe in myself again.

Near the end of the movie (1:29:24), she tells her daughter:

I know you’ve only ever known your father and me. And I love Jack, because he is your father. But there’s another kind of love, Amanda. One that gives you the courage to be better than you are, not less than you are. One that makes you feel that anything is possible. I want you to know that you could have that. I want you to hold out for it.

No comments, just quotes? So out of character for you. So, would you choose family or personal fulfillment? Haven’t seen it yet. It’s in my que at Blockbuster. My boyfriend always cries at chick flicks, so I need more Kleenex first. Saw Fireproof last night and he used many.

Comment, yes

The selection of quotes is a comment in itself. But you’re right, I usually write more about the pitfalls of domestic coupledom.
