A story about this — 3 years ago
I think perhaps this was a little over-hyped for me. I mean, Heath Ledger’s Joker was indeed fantastic, but I kept thinking, “Oscar? Hmm. Maybe, maybe not.” instead of just enjoying it!
Not that I’d call this a thoroughly enjoyable movie. A very good one, but very tense (note the unsubtle use of pitch-increasing tones!) and very very dark.
It didn’t really sweep me up the way I would have wanted, somehow; I was aware that this was a long film. And yet, I didn’t begrudge it a second: it’s a very interest-capturing movie, too – I needed to know what was going to happen next. Sort of a contradiction there, I know.
Really appreciated the reality of it all: this is no comic book, this is almost plausible. Again, though, that adds to the slightly bleak and grim tone of it all. Dark, indeed.
Definitely worth seeing, and again, and almost certainly the DVD. But the complexity of the stories and the characters – the things that make this a good movie – are also things that stop it being something you can unthinkingly sit through, methinks.
