A story about this — 1 year ago
Although I have finished my MA, I didn’t feel that I was competent enough when it came to literary theory. In an effort to become a better scholar, and to be a better educator, I decided to brush up a bit. I have gleaned this book during my MA work, but decided to read it thoroughly during my twice/week commute to my teaching gig.
Carpenter has really made me understand theory and its applications much better. I’m almost finished!

I really know what you mean...
Literary theory is the only bad part about studying literature. I’ll have to pick up this book.

concrete examples
It’s the only plain language theory book that I have read. Ever. Carpenter uses concrete examples—the film Casablanca, Poe’s The Purloined Letter, etc.
Glad my post could help.
