WORTH CONSUMING!

After reading some real bad reviews I went on to rent The Village thinking it wouldn’t be any good. I was wrong.
This clever drama, with it’s atmosphere, symbolism and purposely stilted acting, was a nice and cozy surprise. Yep, there are a few flaws on the script, some scenes could obviously have been done differently.
What I think is the reason for the negative reviews is that people were expecting an horror movie, mainly because of the way it was advertised back when it came out, and got an atmospheric, slow-moving, drama with an undergoing mystery and a few horror/thriller elements.
As for me, who wasn’t expecting any of that, I saw it as it truly is: a deeply symbolical character-study with great score, acting and hardly-noticeable social/political commentary.

Completely Agree

Too many people went into the theater expecting a horror movie, and were pissed when they actually got a realistic (in my opinon) thriller.

I thought it was very original, had it’s fair share of commentary as you mentioned, and good acting. I didn’t really see what was wrong with it.

The issue I had with this movie was its high demand for suspension of disbelief. It was much higher plateau than I could ever tolerate from any movie.
The premise that a secret village could be located in a national park and remain undiscovered for many years was far more than I could accept. Then there was more…the monster, very little rebellion of youth, no worry of forest fires, etc. Furthermore how did they manage to bring in supplies without being discovered?(and I had many more unanswered questions.)
If the movie took place in an earlier time period such as the 50’s or 60’s it would have been more believable to me. I don’t know much about the technology of those days. But I do know that it is damn near impossible to hide in this world. Someone will see you or be looking for you eventually.
