I won’t trash Guy Ritchie for trying to stretch himself, maybe take on something more “serious.” That said, however, I will trash pretty much everyone around him for not having the guts to say, “Hey, Guy, this is crap.” It’s George Lucas all over again. He made two really great films and yes, they’re pretty light and silly but they’re also marvels of timing, editing and intricate plotting like you don’t see too often.
Revolver had a lot of potential in its casting, its editing (the editing is really the best thing about it, almost the only really good thing—WOW!) and elements of its story. But he tried to hard not to do the Monte Cristo thing, and then got all pretentious with his efforts.
Then the end credits, bashing us over the head with how intellectual the whole movie really was with the likes of Deepak Chopra et al talking about the mysteries of the ego turned an already highly emetic product into one that really should carry some kind of biohazard logo.
