I have fond memories of this film. I was always watching this film as a little girl. It seems like every house I went to was either playing this or “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh”. I can still hear some of Roger Miller’s songs in my head, even though before yesterday I hadn’t seen the film in years.

It is a really great adaptation of the Robin Hood story, with Robin Hood as a fox, which was a clever decision by Disney as foxes are said to be clever. Little John is a big loveable bear, who is voiced by Phil Harris, who also voiced the big loveable bear Baloo in “The Jungle Book”.

Prince John is a cowardly lion, who misses his “mommy”, the deceased Queen of England. He decends into a child like state and sucks his thumb at the mere mention of her name, which results in mockery by the over-taxed peasants of England.

The story is done well here. Hiss, the snake sidekick of Prince John, hypnotised the Prince’s brother King Richard into going on the Crusades. While the King is away, Prince John is the acting king, taxing peasants to make himself wealthier. Robin Hood and Little John rob from the rich and give to the poor. Or, as Robin Hood says, since robbed is a filthy word – they “borrow a bit from those who can afford it”. This results in a really funny line by Little John who replies that they “must be in an awful lot of debt by now”. This film is brimming with humor, and heart. It’s not one of my all-time favorite Disney movies, but I do still enjoy it to this day.
