A story about this — 27 weeks ago
There’s plenty to like about this film a half century after its release. It takes up themes that were controversial in their day, notably male chauvanism and racial bigotry, and still makes its point today. War, big oil, fading traditions, and youth vs. experience come up, too. It’s a long movie (201 minutes) because it tries to cover so much – the stories of three generations on a huge Texas ranch. James Dean shows real range of acting skill as he ages about 20 years on screen. Taylor and Hudson are spot on in their roles. And the big surprise is seeing a very young, red-headed Dennis Hopper play their son. Giant is certainly deserving of the many accolades it has received. Well worth watching.
