WORTH CONSUMING!
I loved reading this book. It’s beautifully written. I couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed The Kite runner and I was really looking forward to reading Hosseini’s second book.
More than once I was moved to tears.
What kept coming back to me was, as much as this is fiction, this tale is based on real life incidents. And this is just one story, I can’t imagine the number of similar more tragic stories out there.
I found Mariam and Laila’s strength and friendship very inspiring.

The story is about the lives of two women in war-torn Afghanistan. Mariam at 15 is forced to marry a 40 year old man. She has 7 miscarriages and he beats her brutally. And then 18 years later, he takes a second wife, 14 year old Laila. The two women become friends and allies.
I couldn’t help crying at one point when Mariam’s father betrays her and she comes home to find that her mother has killed herself. And she is then forced to marry this 40 year old man.
When I was 16, a friend of mine was forced to marry a 35 year old man. She stopped going to school and had to stay home and take care of the house etc. She’s had a good life since but I wonder what her life would have been like otherwise.
