I started off really liking this – I’m becoming a huge fan of ‘sexed up’ (I didn’t mean quite so literally!) history, injecting some drama and emotion into dry history. Henry’s panic to have a son and heir, his arranged marriage to his brother’s widow… powerful stuff. Not to mention all the scheming going on behind the scenes.

But then along comes Anne Bolyn, and there’s a very definite change in tone. Sex, sex and more sex – really, I did not need to see a graphic masturbation scene! – and any sympathy for King Harry goes out the window as he becomes obsessed with getting into Anne’s knickers rather than looking out for his country. Poor disgarded Katherine remains the only likeable character throughout the whole piece.

And then – it stops. Just, peters out. Yes, we kind of know what happens, but heck – there are five more wives to get through, and you haven’t even finished off the Anne story!! Apparently the second series will jump to Elizabeth I, which has been done a million times before. Disappointing.
