All Consuming

Brian Egge has consumed…

1984 (Signet Classics)

A story about this — 4 years ago

I just noticed today how Skype uses 1984 to show the formatting of your Skype chats. Pretty funny, but appropriate. One of Skype’s features is encryption is always on. They’re also not trying to compete in the home phone market, which should keep them from having to comply with US wiretap rules.

I liked the book, but it was very dark, and at times seemed to drag on. It certainly is worth reading – especially because there are so many references to it. I think most people know about 1984, but haven’t read it. In Australia we have a show “Big Brother” and is named such because of the constant video monitoring. The Big Brother in 1984, is much more than just having cameras watching you.

I think the book is even more relevant today than when it was first published in 1949.
