A story about this — 2 years ago
An average Hollywood movie, but I hate what they did to the story. I’m usually very forgiving about changes that need to be made to make a story fit the movie format, but they left out my favorite aspect of the story and added an unnecessary and baffling 20 minutes at the end. Plus, I felt they went a little overboard with the visual effects without capturing the magic and whimsy of the market across the wall. There were a few wonderfully funny elements to the movie, but they weren’t enough to overcome my disgust at the changes to the story.
This movie has inspired me never again (with a few notable exceptions, e.g. Harry Potter) to read a book before I watch the movie, or watch the movie after having read the book, because the book is always better. I guess that means I won’t be watching the Golden Compass, which is coming out soon.

I’m with you on this – though I still think Nicole Kidman is perfectly cast as Mrs. Coulter.
It’s like the Lord of the Rings movies – until everyone in the world told me they were really good, there was no way in hell I was going to see them and risk having the story messed up for me.

It came from a book?
I’m glad to be finding this out now. And yes, your right. Never ever read the book first, unless you want to set yourself up for disappointment. I’ve learned this lesson over and over again.

Hey sometimes the book’s author is to blame in the rare case when they write the movie screen play as well. Such as Anne Rice’s Queen of the Damned.

I haven't seen that movie
But I can say the only case I’ve seen of a movie doing the book any justice was with, Interview with a Vampire.
