This is one of those rare instances when the adaptation is better than the book.
The premise is great. But the execution just didn’t do the premise justice. Character development is virtually non-existent, the prose is tedious, and the narration simply falls flat. I wouldn’t have finished this if not for the musical. I just kept flipping hoping that some climax would be reached in the following page, but nothing came. To be honest, I am quite amazed by how the writer actually managed to turn a potentially compelling story into something so bland and unreadable. (Well, but then again, if I had written the book, it might have turned out the same, if not worse.)
I’d say, stick with the musical, stay away from the book.
