WORTH CONSUMING!

Ever since I read “Memoirs of a Geisha” I’ve wanted to read this one, as Arthur Golden mentions the author of this book as being one of his inspirations. So when I managed to find it in a bookshop, I immediately bought it. It did not disappoint. Where MoaG takes place around World War 2, this one describes the life of a Geisha in the 60s and 70s. You get to read about how Mineko meets Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth and several other celebrities that we ‘know’. Fascinating book.

According to wikipedia this book was written after Golden’s book, so it couldn’t have been an inspiration. He did base his story on the same woman though. I’ve only seen the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha”, so I’m curious about the differences between both stories.

Ah right. In the foreword to my edition, Arthur Golden mentions “Mineko Iwasagi – the author of ‘Geisha of Gion’” as an inspiration. I jumped to the conclusion that GoG was earlier.

Both books are definitely worth reading, so you should give them a shot.
