NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Why the ridiculous voice over? Absolutely took away from what could have been a decent movie. Many points for visually stunning the audience but the voiceover in our theater was causing bursts of laughter because it was so damn persistent and innane. In a movie if your character shouts, you do not need a voice over saying “He shouted from the deepest depths of his soul.” That is what the acting is for, to show the depths of the character. Real Shame.

graphic novels...

...and comic books function largely through a cooperation of graphic art and text. While it is possible to tell a story simply with pictures in a comic book, the artist’s/author’s additions to the illustrations via descriptive text and narration are meant to elaborate on pre-existing notions that may or may not wholly come through by means of the illustrations alone.

Since the film is an adapation of a graphic novel-and as far as I’m concerned has never attempted to hide or deny that fact- it would seem appropriate that the creative forces involved would work to keep the feeling of the original work somewhat intact for a theater-going audience. Hence the “inane” voice over that apparently ruined the film for you.

If you went in to the film not expecting a graphic novel on film, I can imagine you would have found many things to be frustrating.

Cheers.

The over the top content of the voice-over was to be expected—but Faramir’s ridiculous performance is not to be forgiven. Outside of that I thought the movie was a lot of fun.
