WORTH CONSUMING!

Are you one of those people wondering why in the world we need a documentary on electric cars? Does the subject ring a faint bell, but you don’t think it’s really all that important? That is the place I was at when I heard about this movie. I knew it would be preaching to the choir, as I am pretty into environmental topics and I thought that I could put off seeing the film.

Well, don’t make my mistake. This is a great documentary and it will do the amazing feat of making you mourn the loss of a car you hardly knew about. After watching this movie you will also understand the difference between the electric car, the hybrid, and the fuel cell car and be able to intellgently converse about the factors involved in the death of electric cars: consumers, technology (batteries), the automotive industry, the federal/California state government, and the oil industry.

Now I know why electric cars are a vague memory. I also know now that they shouldn’t be. They were a successful, desired product that was manipulated out of existance around the same time the Hummer was mass-marketed. Coincidence?

This is an essential film for those who want to remain an informed and articulate voice in the future U.S. energy policy.

Batteries? No...

At least not according to the film. They did a reasonably convincing job of persuading that battery technology progressed well enough that it was not really an issue (most people’s commute is well within the range cited…either 100 or 200 miles. Most people only commute around 40-50 miles on average day.)

Also presumably if automakers produced the product and it was purchased in sufficient numbers, some money would go back into R&D and help produce a longer-lasting more efficient battery that would lengthen that range.
