All Consuming

John is consuming…

World of Warcraft

Why I want to consume this — 5 years ago

I finally broke down, after 2 years of avoiding it – and bought World of WarCraft a few nights ago.

This evening, I came across the WorldofWarcraft Crazy Christmas on YouTube so now I am in a rush to start playing it.

The user manual for the game is slightly daunting but I think I actually will read it before playing.

One thing that is helping me get acquainted with the game more quickly is watching the videos (screencasts, they are called) recorded from the game by people who like playing it.

One thing that is cool about WoW for programmers is that you can customize it using the Lua programming langauge and XML.

I may not keep playing this for a really long time but I think I will give it some serious attention this winter.

I decided to stick with World of WarCraft

It is a really fun game. You have to play it for a couple days before it really sinks in how good it is.

Start playing it at the beginning of a weekend. Take your time and enjoy it. Then you will see how fun it can be.

Some tips to get the most out of it are:

  1. Unusable loot you gather can be sold, earning you money twice as fast as the coins you collect from corpses.
  2. Collect as many bags as you can use. If you cannot use them, bring them to a vendor and sell them because they will pay you a good price for them.
  3. Upgrade your armor.
  4. Asking for a little help/information from time to time is not usually offensive.
  5. Some upper level players are incredibly generous with excess items they have that are very valuable to you – like free armor and free armor kits. Sometimes even weapons. Be appreciative and thankful for their generosity.
  6. Some players, often at your own level give or take a little, communicate rudely and with no respect. They will repeatedly invite you to duels and sometimes to join their party on a quest – without asking your first. Block them using the sOcial (hit the O key) dialog. They may not learn their lesson, but they will not bother you anymore.
  7. Be courteous, kind, and cheerful. When you get to Level 9 or 10, start going back to the first Inn you discovered in the game – and offer players inside or in its vicinity weapons or little extra items of armor you do not need. Their appreciation will be your reward. And you will make new friends, allies, and customers in the process. Giving stuff away for free often pays off.
  8. Learn how to do Trade with other players, find and use an Auction House, and talk to guards to get directions.
  9. Learn the precise details of how to sleep at an Inn to stay Well-Rested and staying fed on certain items to stay Well-Fed. These two things are key because you earn experience points at 2x the normal rate when you are in these states.
  10. Learn new spells and techniques from a Class Trainer whenever you go up to a new even-numbered Level.
  11. Seek pet training when you go up to a new odd-numbered Level, if you have a pet (e.g. if you are a warlock, say).
  12. Join a guild. Look for one whose members you spot often, and especially ones whose members seem friendly, cheerful, and helpful. People in guilds help each other. A guild is like a Party that never ends, a team that never quits, a comradeship always at your fingertips.
  13. Be nice to lots of people, and not only will they be nice to you – but you will start to get a reputation among those in your faction. People do say nice things about you behind your back, and that is what a good reputation is. Random acts of kindness will make people want to join forces with you and look up to you. Helping people feels good, and usually costs you very little.
  14. Find a Bank in the first big city and put your excess usefulvaluable loot in a safety deposit box there. Its contents are available in every bank that is located in every major city of the world. You do not have to go back to the same bank.
  15. Ask before initiating a trade, duel, or party to someone else.
  16. Learn to use the mailboxes to send/receive money, merchandise, and messages with people who are not online at the moment.

Hope this list helps you get the most fun you can out of this really cool game.
