NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Okay, I realize that this film is historically popular, but I just couldn’t stand it at all. The song and dance scenes were ridiculous and way too long, the story is full of anti-feminist messages, and the plot was slow and underdeveloped.

From all I’ve heard about Audrey Hepburn (this is the first film I’ve seen her in), I expected this film to be at least alright, but it turned out to be horrible.

I especially love how they try to make books, and anything associated with it, as dull, boring and sombre as possible.

I think that the film is popular now for its art direction and fashion.

Taking this movie far too seriously...

Musicals often include an awful lot of stereotypes, mostly to keep them from being too heavy. The focus is on the fun of the music and dancing, not how dreary the set is. I think the goal here was to contrast small town bookstore girl with fashion model with crazy hectic bustling city life, being taken out of one world and deposited into another. In that sort of story, filmed in that time period, as a musical with a lot of focus on the music and dance, it’s not surprising that books are made out to be boring and women to be pink pretty mindless beings. You have to take it with a grain of salt… because if you like Gershwin, it’s fun to sing along to.

Well, I watched the film last fall for a film theory course, so we had to examine a lot of the underlying tones within the film as opposed to just looking at the exterior. It’s just kind of shocking when you look at it with today’s mentality because everything’s just so blatant.

And even ignoring all that … I still thought the song and dance scenes were way too freaking long. Even Singin’ in the Rain wasn’t nearly as dull.
