Why I want to consume this — 3 years ago
I’m just hoping that they tell the TRUE TRUE story of Beth Short and don’t make her out to be what most people thought she was.
The real story of her is in one of Sylvia Browne’s books, I’m not quite sure which one, but I’m going to check later. Her story, straight from the horses mouth.
Swank and Hartnett have never really been two of my favorite actors, though I have somewhat more respect for Hilary Swank. I just hope Josh Hartnett doesn’t screw anything up like he has in every single movie he’s ever been in.
I think my husband and I will go see it on date night or something. I’m sort of excited, but have heard mixed reviews. We’ll see…

It has nothing to do with the true story...
It’s based on a novel by James Ellroy. It takes HUGE liberties with the real events, and the story doesn’t really center around Elizabeth Short. It centers around the detectives working on her case.

Thank you for informing me of that, haha, I was worried! :) I just finished watching it and they had the little note at the end of the movie saying, “While this story is inspired by the real murder of Elizabeth Short, the characters and specific incidents in the film are fictionally based on James Ellroy’s Novel ‘The Black Dahlia.’”
Though I still don’t see why Ellroy titled the book that since it wasn’t really so much about her. I guess I would have to read the book to find out though, right?
Either way, I was quite disappointed with the film. While I love Mia Kirshner, and Scarlett Johansson, I have never been a huge fan of Josh Harnett or Hilary Swank. Johansson didn’t really fit her role, but Kirshner I think was perfect. I’d like to see her do a film about what really happened to Elizabeth Short. It was almost corny, and not very well put together. Too long for my taste as well. Oh and Kirshner and Swank look nothing alike, I think they could have matched someone a little better say like Jennifer Connelly..
Oh well, it was a good tome filler though.
